Summer's Calling: Wind, Water, Wonder
From The Baltimore Sun's Maryland News Section
By Michael Catalini, July 19, 2010
Hal Ashman remembers the day his connection to watersport took hold.
He was in college, spending a summer in Ocean City, and found himself on the shores of Assawoman Bay one evening with wind whipping around him and a windsurfing board at his feet. Having never taken a lesson, he mounted the board and grabbed the sail.
"It was pure luck. Somehow I stood in the right place, held the equipment in the right way — and the wind was blowing like crazy — and all of a sudden, things just started working," said Ashman, now 49. "I was flying along the water on the windsurfer with really no experience ... and I knew I was getting hooked."
Stand Up Paddleboarding at Ultimate Watersports
Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP), is an emerging global sport with a Hawaiian heritage. It is an ancient form of surfing, and began as a way for surfing instructors to manage their large groups of students, as standing on the board gave them a higher viewpoint, increasing visibility of what was going on around them. In the early 1960s, the Beach Boys of Waikiki would stand on their long boards, and paddle out with outrigger paddles to take pictures of the tourists learning to surf. This is where the term "Beach Boy Surfing", another name for Stand Up Paddle Boarding, originates.
Aside from the super-fast learning curve and the pure fun factor, SUP'ing provides a great 'core' workout and has been gaining popularity with cross-over athletes looking for new and exciting ways to train. SUPs are appearing around the globe, anywhere where there is easy access to safe waters. Now you can get hooked too, with Ultimate Watersports! Our SUP rentals are available at both locations: Dundee Creek, perfect for the flat water novice, and Hammerman Beach for the adventure of open water! Join us!

Winter Gear Rental
3 Reasons to Rent Your Skis/Snowboard with Ultimate Watersports
- We use only recent model, top brand name gear in excellent condition. Any problems with comfort, fit or mechanical issues are corrected immediately, and at no charge.
- Equipment rented at other shops is typically older gear in questionable condition. If your child has fit, comfort or mechanical failure, there is nothing we can do other than have them rent proper gear from the mountain at full charge. Due to liability limitations, Ultimate Watersports staff can not adjust or repair rental equipment from other shops.
- No hassle for you or your child in transporting equipment to or from the bus each week. Nothing to forget at 6am on Saturday mornings! Ultimate Watersports professionals personally take care of fitting all of our rental equipment at the mountain each week, making sure every child is comfortable in their boots and confident with their equipment.
Why Our Winter Camps Are Different
By now, you've probably heard from other parents, this camp is NOT just a "pick-up & delivery service" for your kids. Since we began our snow camps for kids in 1995, our goal has been singular: to provide the safest and most exciting on-snow experience for children and teens.
How do we give you the best camp experience?
- A veteran team of camp staff, many of whom are the same experts who run our summer camps on the Chesapeake Bay. These adults are extremely well trained and passionate about helping kids become not just better skiers and snowboarders, but responsible, independent and safe in any mountain environment.
- Ultimate Watersports management team members are in constant contact with staff insuring complete staff coverage of the slopes as well as mountain facilities (cafeteria, rental shop, etc.) In addition, any camper requiring personal attention, for any reason, is attended to immediately.
- All staff are in Ultimate Watersports uniform (unmistakable neon orange) that can be seen on every slope from top to bottom.
- Campers wear Ultimate Watersports ID legbands (neon orange) so that everyone on the mountain (not just our staff) know these are camp kids in our program.
- Staff members work in teams of two at all times.
- We teach and enforce the "buddy system" to all campers. No campers "fly solo", ever!
- Each staff team is assigned specific slopes throughout the day so that all campers at all abilities can visualize Ultimate Staff on any slope.
- Ultimate Watersports maintains an outstanding relationship with the Ski Roundtop management team, Ski School, Rental Shop, Ski Patrol and lift attendants. They are all familiar with our mission and work closely with us to provide our campers a first quality experience from start to finish.
- We care about your children. Not just about their skiiing/snowboarding skills but how their day is going in general. Just ask any parent of campers in our program. They seem to brag more about our team than we do.
- All staff and campers must carry Motorola 2-way radios. This will allow every camper to hear important announcements/reminders made by our staff throughout the day, such as:
- Ski & Snowboard Lesson times and locations
- Group Activities times and locations
- Lunch time and location
- Weather Alerts
- Changing Slope Condition Alerts
- End of Day reminders!
- Rental Equipment Return
- Bus pick-up location
In addition, campers will also have immediate access to our entire staff if they have any urgent needs or emergencies, during the course of the day. Our staff response time (arrival on scene) to emergency calls is typically no more than one to two minutes. This is unprecedented in the snow sports industry. Each morning, our staff make sure that each camper's radio is set to the correct frequency as well as instruct each camper on protocol for communication and emergencies.
Parent & Camper Testimonials
Beth Mayers
"I have 2 children that have been priviledged enough to attend and enjoy both Ultimate Watersports summer and winter programs for over 6 years. Our kids have been involved in many programs at many locations, and we have not found a program that has the guidance, safety, teaching, comfort, and overall amazing experiences as does Ultimate Watersports. The programs are thoroughly planned and well supervised for maximum fun and safety. Many of our kids’ good friends and lifelong experiences have come from Ultimate Watersports. We are lucky to have Ultimate available in our area, and we will continue to be a part of the programs for a long time."
Patrice Brylske
"Thank you. Adam had a great time. I appreciate your regular communication and attention to supervision with the kids. It is a big leap of faith to let your child go to the slopes for the day without a parent!"
Thanks again!
LaVeita Johnson
"Just wanted to say, THANK YOU!!! Kristen had a fabulous time! Your staff did a great job working with her. Thanks again to you and your amazing staff for the personalized attention."
Christianna Leahy
"My son, Roan, who skiis in Vermont often, said it was the best day of skiing of his life. Thank you so much for taking him at the last minute. He would love to do it every weekend."
Mollye Komins (aged 10)
"I was very nervous when I signed up to go skiing with Ultimate Watersports. I was especially scared because I was a first time skier with friends who have been skiing their whole life! When I got to Ski Roundtop my friends and I took a ski lesson. Those who weren’t ready to go on the big slopes could stay on the beginner mountain or take another lesson. After I practiced on the beginner slopes I felt ready to go on the real mountains! I felt totally comfortable and safe because there are tons of Ultimate Winter Camp counselors around the slopes to help or give you pointers and spend time on the slopes with you to make sure you are okay! At the end of the day I couldn’t believe how much fun I had and that I actually learned how to ski! I can’t believe I was ever worried about going! I can’t wait for next week!"
1st Time Skier (NO MORE!!!)
Chris Callanan
"I got your January camp as a Christmas present and have been loving it. It was/is my first snowboarding experience and I just wanted to write you and thank you for running such an excellent program and making my first times out on the slopes as great as they have been. Again, thank you so much... I'm loving snowboarding so much and I feel I owe a lot of that to you and your program."
Mary Leigh Krock
"Thanks for putting together such a terrific ski/board camp. My whole family has really enjoyed it over the last three years."

Rock n' River Camp
Just think of the stories they'll have to tell when they return to school!
Ultimate Watersports has collaborated with Earth Treks to bring you a fresh new idea that is a guaranteed winner. This five-day camp is for kids age 10 to 14, and it will expose your child to two of the greatest adventure sports around: Rock Climbing and River Kayaking. There are 24 spaces available for each week of this series, divided into two groups of 12.
Each day of camp will begin and end at Earth Treks Timonium. We will begin at 9:00am and end at 3:00pm. Strong swimming skills are mandatory.
Tuition
$425 per child for the session (early registration discount not applicable).
Additional information and registration on the Rock N' River camp is available on the Earth Treks Summer Camps Web site.
2010 Session Dates
- Session 1: August 2 - 6, Timonium
- Session 2: August 9 -13, Timonium
Camp Schedule
The kids will all start out at Earth Treks Timonium, the largest indoor rock climbing gym on the East Coast.
One group will spend the first two days at the indoor gym where they will learn the basic safety skills needed for climbing and then get the opportunity to climb their hearts out! They will learn about bouldering and roped climbing, as well as teamwork and building self-esteem.
Monday and Tuesday
The second group will have the unique opportunity to discover the exciting world of Adventure Kayaking. Under the guidance of the Certified Kayak Instructors from Ultimate Watersports, campers will explore the Gunpowder River, while learning the basic skills of recreational paddling. Topics covered include kayaking, tides, currents, weather, water safety and self-rescue.
Wednesday and Thursdqy
The two groups of kids will trade places, with the rock climbing group going outdoors to paddle and the paddling group coming indoors to climb.
Friday
This final day will be spent in the Earth Treks Timonium gym. The campers will meet up for some friendly Olympic-style events involving everything the campers learned in the first four days.
Lunch & Things
Campers must provide their own lunch, preferably in a cooler or insulated lunch bag. All watersports equipment is provided, however campers must bring a swim suit, dry change of clothes, sneakers, sun screen (spf 30 or better), and watersports booties.

I want to thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable team building event last Friday. The kayaking activities challenged my staff and helped to bring them closer together. At the same time everyone had a great time. Your people were friendly, professional and knowledgeable, all qualities that we try to promote with our associates as well. You were exactly what the doctor ordered. And my team even won!
You should be very proud of your organization. They are top shelf. Any business could benefit greatly from the services you provide. I am also sure that you turned some of my staff on to the joys of kayaking. Finally, the buffet cookout was excellent as well. Keep up the good work. Thanks for helping to build Brick Bodies.

I just wanted to say thanks for such a great morning on Wednesday. I knew it would be great, and I'm so glad my staff thought so as well. Many of them have been thanking me for such a wonderful day. Even better, they've been telling all of the people who didn't come what fun they missed!
So, I just wanted to pass along the gratitude to you and your staff for making our day such a huge success! I look forward to working with you again some time in the future.

Just a quick note to express my gratitude for the wonderful sailing lessons I took at your facility this summer. My instructor was very skilled, informative, safety oriented and pleasant. I laughed like a kid and enjoyed the "righting" drills the most. It definitely increased my confidence. I hope to get back down there soon and practice my skills.

Kayak Lessons
You just bought your first kayak and you’re ready for the next step. To paddle safely with confidence and get the full enjoyment to maximize your investment, consider taking a lesson at Ultimate Water Sports!
If you have yet to buy one, then our 3-Hour Quick Start Course is a must. Your ability to select the proper type of kayak will be greatly enhanced once you know how a kayak is supposed to perform. The small price of our course will save you both time and money when you are ready to invest in your first kayak!
Great instructors! They each have a very distinct style and provide tremendous support in helping your clients achieve what seemed previously unachievable. The other women from class were really charged and had nothing but great things to say about their experience.
I thoroughly enjoyed the classes and feel closer than ever to mastering my technique and more confident on bracing as well. Thanks to their quality instruction, I am unlearning some bad habits.
